Books That Inspire Kids to Become Readers
Literacy coaching and consulting in schools. Engaging fiction and nonfiction for children and teachers.
I'm excited to be heading to Las Vegas to present four sessions for the I Teach 2nd Grade strand of the SDE 2017 National Conference.
Headliners include Dr. Jean Feldman, Rick Wormeli, and Dr. Richard Gentry, who wrote the forward to my upcoming spelling book. My sessions include comprehension strategies (Do you know what the three most effective strategy categories are?), transforming spelling instruction (Spelling is for reading!), an introduction to Writers’ Workshop, and effective teaching techniques for use in a whole group setting. I love second grade kids and I’m looking forward to meeting their teachers!
Three new books will be out this fall! First is Super Spellers. Published by Stenhouse, the book trumpets the idea that spelling is for reading, gives practical ideas for meaningful assessments and powerful word lists, explains spelling strategies that teach kids how to spell (not what to spell), and describes spelling activities that focus on sound, pattern, and meaning. Next are two books from Picture Window Books. Additions to the popular Leaders Doing Headstands series, these biographies recount the childhoods of two great Americans and are titled When Walt Disney Rode a Pig and When Neil Armstrong Built a Wind Tunnel.
