Dyslexia's connections to brain-based reading and spelling Over the last three years, while researching spelling instruction, I came upon connections to dyslexia, a brain-based condition that makes it difficult for some children (and adults) to read. Inspired by what I learned (and egged on by my mother and sister), I have created seminars on dyslexia (what it is, what it isn’t, and how teachers and parents can help children who struggle to read). Over the next three months, I’m taking my presentations on the road to New York, Missouri, and Washington. If you can’t get to a one, I encourage you read Richard Gentry and Gene Ouellette’s wonderful new book, Brain Words, which has a forward written by yours truly, and then follow that with a dose of reading from Super Spellers!
Spring happenings Spring is a time for planting the seeds of effective literacy instruction. In the states of Washington, Missouri, Texas, and New York, I'm presenting on spelling instruction and the connections between dyslexia and brain-based reading. In a mid-state Pennsylvania school, I’m working with teaching model lessons on Kid Writing, vocabulary instruction, and fluency development. And close to home, I'm helping teachers run second grade and kindergarten reading groups. Those kids make me smile and feel good about the work I do in the field of education.
