Classroom-based coaching, reading and writing strategies, Title I presentations, literacy program development, and more.
My greatest interest is working with elementary schools to provide teachers and administrators with multi-day, classroom-based coaching, in which a group of teachers and a coach concentrate on previously identified and agreed upon strategies, a model and its components, or instructional routines and techniques. Across a number of days and months, and across grade levels, I teach model lessons (teaching students for the benefit of teachers). I then meets with teachers, typically one on one, but sometimes in groups, to discuss and reflect on the instruction, content, and the underlying research that supports best practices. Because I learn from the teachers I work with, our exploration of educational issues is a collaborative process. By engaging in longitudinal professional development, districts build local capacity, administrators build stronger literacy programs, and teachers become more masterful instructors. The end result is that students become more competent readers and writers, which is the best result of all! I offer other professional development options, such as full-day literacy workshops and daytime and evening Title I parent presentations. For reading conferences and reading councils, I provide speaking programs, as well as workshops . I also do author visits and present author programs and assemblies for children’s book festivals, library programs, and school author days. And in classrooms I talk about the craft of writing and guide students as they write authentic narratives, poems, lyrics, opinions, informational pieces, and more.
